Cities in Maine


Bangor
The third largest city in Maine, Bangor sits on the Panobscot River. I-95 runs through the center of town. Bangor’s past industries include the lumber and the paper industries.


Augusta
The capital city of Maine, Augusta is located in southern Maine. Augusta sits between the cities of Lewiston and Waterville, along I-95. The Kennebec River flows through Augusta, and then parallels I-95 to Waterville.


Portland
The largest city in the state of Maine, Portland is home to over 65,000. The city also has the state’s largest port. Portland is not the capital of Maine, but because of its size and port, it has become the economic, art, and education center for the state.


Houlton
Houlton sits on the US/Canada border, near the intersection of US 1 and I-95. It has played an important role in US military history.


Presque Isle
Located in northeast Maine, Presque Isle is home to almost 10,000 residents. Presque Isle is not far from the Canadian border. Maine truck drivers will most likely get to Presque Isle by taking I-95 to Houlton, and then driving north on US 1.


Waterville
Waterville is home to Colby College. The city is located about half an hour north of Augusta.


Maine Industries
One cannot think of Maine without thinking of a Maine lobster. Other types of seafood, including clams, are important to the state economy. Other food products produced in Maine include blueberries and maple syrup.


Maine is covered by large forests. The paper and the lumber industries are important to the state’s economy.
