Do I have to graduate from high school before I can get a job in the trucking industry?
While there are some qualifications you must meet before obtaining a job in the Maine trucking industry, completing high school is not one of them; however it is highly recommended that you graduate high school or receive your GED.


Am I required to meet any specific qualifications before I can attend a Maine truck driving school?
Yes, there are some qualifications. You must have a driver’s license issued by the state of Maine, you must be at least 18 years old, and you must pass a drug test and a US Department of Transportation physical exam.


Must I attend a Maine truck driving school before I can drive a tractor trailer?
While attending a truck driving school is not required to drive a tractor trailer in the state of Maine, truck driving schools are the best places to learn how to safely and legally drive a commercial vehicle in the state of Maine.


Do I need a special license to drive a tractor trailer in the state of Maine?
You do need a special license. This special license is called a commercial driver’s license or CDL for short.


What do I have to do to get a commercial driver’s license?
You must complete and pass a written exam, a pre-trip inspection, and a road test. These tests are given by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).


Is there anything I must do once I have my CDL in order to stay eligible in the state of Maine?
Maintaining a good driving record is the best thing you can do to ensure a successful career as a commercial truck driver. You must pass a US Department of Transportation physical exam every other year.


What are the minimum age requirements to operate a tractor trailer?
To obtain an intrastate license you must be at least 18 years old. An intrastate license allows you to operate most commercial vehicles within the state of Maine. If you are planning on working throughout the region or throughout the United States, you must have an interstate license. You can qualify for an interstate license when you are 21 years old.
